Rhinoplasty / Nose Job Atlanta
Rhinoplasty (also known as a nose job) is the medical term for a surgical procedure that is designed to reshape the nose and create facial harmony. Along with aesthetic concerns, a rhinoplasty (also commonly referred to as a “nose job”) can also be performed for conditions such as difficulty in breathing, eating or sleeping, or in cases of nasal deformity as a result of trauma.
Although the eyes are said to be the “window to the soul,” in reality the nose has the greatest impact on the overall aesthetics of the face. Because the nose is generally the first element of the fact that is noticed by others, an expertly performed rhinoplasty can have a dramatic effect on the overall balance of the face. At North Atlanta Plastic Surgery Group, we believe there is an art to achieving a natural looking rhinoplasty.
The ultimate goal often represents a balance of alleviating any associated conditions while achieving aesthetic desires with the least possible change. Dr. Abolmaali will personally discuss your concerns and/or conditions during your consultation in order to set realistic goals and then carefully determine the procedures that will best help achieve them.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How can I get a natural looking Nose Job?
Any change in the nose can have a dramatic effect on the aesthetics of the face. For that reason, a ‘less is more’ approach in rhinoplasty often produces the best result. Changing the shape and profile of a person’s nose is not a ‘cookie cutter’ operation. Just as each face is unique, so are the aesthetic goals of each individual. Dr. Abolmaali listens to your concerns to develop an individualized plan for you. A natural looking nose, balanced to your features is the result.
Should I have open rhinoplasty or closed rhinoplasty?
Dr. Abolmaali performs both open and closed techniques in rhinoplasty surgery. The choice of technique depends on your required procedure. In open rhinoplasty, the nose is lifted from the face allowing the surgeon access to all the elements of the nose. It enables him to correct conditions in a more controlled fashion. For example, ‘tip plasty,’ the correction of the nasal tip for a bulbous tip or asymmetries, is best achieved through the open technique and is very difficult to accomplish by closed rhinoplasty (accessing the nose through the nostrils). However, closed rhinoplasty is the best technique for dealing with a hump or the size of the nose.
Dr. Abolmaali will discuss the different options available to you after examining you and determining which procedures are necessary to achieve your goals. Dr. Abolmaali answers any questions you may have regarding each surgical approach.
Am I a candidate for rhinoplasty?
Anyone can consider rhinoplasty after achieving skeletal maturity. This is normally achieved one to two years after puberty and is different for males and females with males taking a little longer.
You need to be in good health and a non-smoker to benefit the most from this surgery. Bleeding disorders or blood thinning medications can adversely affect your welfare during the surgery and post-operative healing. Smoking can adversely affect healing after the procedure.
Finally, having realistic expectations is a must for rhinoplasty surgery. You and Dr. Abolmaali will thoroughly discuss your goals at the initial consultation.
How can rhinoplasty help me?
Rhinoplasty is a very satisfying surgery for both you and the surgeon. Most people find their entire face more harmonious after the procedure, which bolsters self-image and increases confidence.
There are many conditions rhinoplasty can help to improve:
- Aesthetic concerns, such as shape and appearance of the nose
- Proportion, the nose appears too large or small for the face
- Length or size of the tip, the nose appears droopy or the nasal tip enlarged
- Trauma correction, perhaps an accident or fall results in a ‘crooked nose’
- Difficulty breathing through the nostrils
- Deviated septum or other abnormalities affecting the septum
What to expect during a consult for a rhinoplasty at North Atlanta Plastic Surgery Group?
At your initial consult you are warmly greeted by staff, and of course, asked to fill out the requisite paperwork. There is a general medical condition form and a survey to help determine your concerns and the treatment you are seeking.
Dr. Abolmaali then sits down with you to discuss your objectives and expectations from surgery. An examination follows with the doctor examining the inside of the nose to determine if there is any deviated septum or other abnormalities which need to be addressed during surgery. He asks you to smile to examine your teeth and the profile of your chin. With rhinoplasty, it is important to look beyond the nose and determine the effect of surgery on the overall facial balance.
The technician takes a few photos of your face, then Dr. Abolmaali discusses with you different treatment plans with expected results. It is always helpful to read about and research the procedure you are contemplating, so you can ask questions during the visit.
I have a ‘droopy’ nose when I smile. Can this be fixed with surgery?
Rhinoplasty can dramatically change the face both statically and dynamically (a still face and as it moves). There is a muscle which pulls down the nasal tip when a person smiles. Adjustment of this muscular action can lessen the appearance of a ‘droopy nose’ upon smiling. Rhinoplasty in experienced hands can definitely improve the dynamics of your smile.
Do I need a chin implant and rhinoplasty?
A fellowship-trained plastic surgeon considers many factors affecting the final outcome of rhinoplasty for each individual. If your features indicate it, Dr. Abolmaali discusses the option of combining a chin augmentation with rhinoplasty during the initial consult. These two operations are often done in conjunction with each other. Chin augmentation can be achieved in several ways, such as using implants or fat grafting. The goal is to achieve a natural looking nose in a well-balanced face both from the front view and in profile.
Can a rhinoplasty be covered by insurance?
If you are having breathing difficulty through the nostrils, especially if the condition is the result of a fall or accident, there is a possibility that the condition meets insurance criteria. An experienced surgeon identifies these conditions during physical examination. Depending on the surgeon’s findings and your insurance carrier, there are instances where rhinoplasty is covered. However, as in other cosmetic surgeries, insurance companies do not normally cover aesthetic portions of the surgery.
Dr. Abolmaali’s team submits your file and photos to the insurance company for approval, if the procedure is clinically indicated.
What can I expect for recovery after rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is an outpatient surgery. Dr. Abolmaali has privileges in multiple surgery centers in northern Atlanta, including the Alpharetta, Marietta, Roslyn, Dunwoody and Sandy Spring suburbs. After the surgery, most individuals are discharged to go home after one to two hours with post-operative instructions and any necessary prescriptions in hand.
Depending on the technique or specific procedure, recovery varies from person to person. There is usually some discomfort for the first couple days for which pain medications are prescribed. Some swelling and bruising in the face is expected, especially around the eyes and over the cheeks. Over the next five to seven days, swelling resolves and bruising gradually fades away. Most people feel well enough to resume normal daily activities after two days, and resume work after one to two weeks if the work does not involve physical or strenuous activities. People who undergo rhinoplasty normally return to the gym after four weeks. Dr. Abolmaali recommends that you avoid contact sports or any activity with a risk of trauma to the face.
Individualized recovery expectations are discussed with you during the pre-op visit as well as after the surgery.
